Gmail now gives users the ability to use SSL-secured connection or surfing Gmail. This makes the encryption of data between the browser and Gmail, which can be useful for checking email in public places.
You can choose to always use HTTPS or not. Go to your settings (General tab) and get the last shot of the page. If you want to navigate Gmail using HTTPS, select the first option Using Always https or you do want to use, then select always https and save the settings. I recommend that you enable the setting for anyone to use Gmail as your mail client, but especially those who use other Google services and use force https.
You can access the configuration menu by clicking the Settings link in the upper right of your Gmail account. At the end of the menu that after clicking on the link and review the show Always use https.
